  • EVERY SCHOOL DAY MATTERS

    Did you know that missing just 2 days of school can add up to 18 missed days a year? When students are absent, they may fall behind academically, struggle with confidence, and miss opportunities to make connections. These absences have a lasting impact on their learning and development. We believe every day matters. Let’s keep our students in school every day and help them in stay on track!

  • 2025-26 Central DOE Attendance Policy-EVERY DAY COUNTS!

    Attending school, participating in class, and demonstrating understanding are all essential components of student learning and achieving success in school and in life. New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) are responsible for making every effort to remove attendance barriers and helping every student attend and learn in school every day.

    The NYCPS Attendance Policy aligns with the Chancellor’s priorities of reimagining the student experience and empowering families to be our true partners by creating policies and school experiences for every student that:

    • prevent absences;
    • promote student engagement;
    • build relational trust with families and communities;
    • celebrate student success;
    • meet the needs of the whole child; and
    • reduce chronic absenteeism.
    To this end, the NYCPS 2025-26 Attendance Policy ensures that all NYCPS students are:
    • effectively engaged, connected to community resources and partnerships, and mentored and counseled, as appropriate;
    • receiving the right support at the right time to remove barriers to regular attendance; and
    • provided the necessary information and tools to facilitate their return to school.

    Attendance Definitions and Expectations

    During the 2025-26 school year, and in accordance with New York State Law, NYCPS will use attendance as a measure of student engagement and instructional time in remote and in-person learning settings.

  • Help Your Child Do Well in School: Build the Habit of Good Attendance

    Did you know?
    • Too many absences in elementary school can cause children to struggle socially and academically.
    • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
    • Missing 10% of school (2 days each month) can make it harder to learn to read and do basic math.

    Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school — and themselves.
    Start building this habit NOW and through the years so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day, is important!

    What you can do
    • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
    • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
    • Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
    • Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up.
    • Monitor your child’s absences.
    • Try to schedule nonurgent medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session.
    • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers and our school counselors for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
